Respiratory therapists schools teach students to perform respiratory therapy treatment on patients with respiratory needs, illnesses, or disease. Respiratory therapists complete either 2 year associate degree or 4 year bachelor degree program. Upon graduation, students can choose to sit for a national exam to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist. After passing this exam, students may decide to sit for two additional exams to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist. In hospitals, respiratory therapists work in the intensive care, critical care units, or a hospital wing. Respiratory therapists also perform other tasks that might include assisting patients who have chronic lung diseases, setting up and monitoring ventilator equipment, or testing patients for lung abnormalities. Respiratory therapists are trained to operate different devices to treat patients. They connect patients to ventilators by inserting a tube down their windpipe. Next they set the rate and volume of oxygen that will flow into patients' lungs. Some patients use ventilators and other life support systems at home. Respiratory Therapists teach patients how to use them and check the equipment. As the population continues to age this occupation is expected to grow faster than other occupations. The respiratory schools normally offer financial aid to qualified applicants. Many also offer job placement to graduates and in some cases alumni.
