Career in Animation

Animators use specialized computer animation computer software to create images which create the illusion of movement. They may develop each image separtely or more commonly create animation images which morph from one frame to another. They typically work as part of a group of computer animators producing full and short length films. While some computer animators may have a certification in computer animation, most have attended a computer animation college or specialy animation school. They may have a bachelor or masters degree in animation. People normally choose a career in animation because of a love of art and technology. It is a fast paced career which is constantly being redefined.

The field of computer animation is a rapidly emerging and changing occupation so there is no "standard" job description. Computer animators may work alone or with a team of animators. They may have a great deal of artistic licence, or be limited and required to produce within very precise guidelines. They may specialize in animation character, creating two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional shapes, special visual effects, or the titles and credits. Or may specialize in animation areas such as video game programming, game art, or integrating computer-generated sequences with live action sequences. They use a constantly growing and changing range of computer graphics programs and two- and three-dimensional animation programs to create images that simulate motion. A career in animation is not for those that don't like change.

In a animatin career you may do contract (freelance) work, or be employed in an animation studio. In either of these case, computer animators spend long periods of time sitting in front of a computer monitor. Long hours of overtime may be required to complete projects on time. As a contractor, you may be required to work on several projects at once to meet your financial goals.

Computer animators need a combination of art and technical computer skills. They may acquire these skills by taking related animation courses from an animation college or private animation school, by starting as a trainee in an animation studio and learning on the job, or by combining related animation courses and work experience. They may take a series of part-time animation courses, or a full-time animation college program that requires up to three years to complete. It's a good idea to discuss possible training options with people currently working computer animation, particularly potential employers, before you sign up for a animation training program. To get a job as an animator, you will need a "portfolio" that demonstrates your drawing skills and includes an animation movie.

If you have artistic talent and enjoy learning about new developments in computer animation you will be the right person for a career in animation. You can work quickly and deal with the pressure of deadlines, adapt your style to suit the needs of different studios and clients, and work well with others in a team environment. Just as important, you are willing to actively promote your work and market your skills.

Computer animation is possible because of the optical phenomenon "persistence of vision", that makes comptuer animation possible. The human eye retains an image for a micro second after the image disappears, so when 21 frames per second of an animated film flash through a computer screen or television set, the flow of motion on the screen looks constant.

To get started on your career in computer animation you will need to select a animation college or animation school.
